By: David Maxwell Shuey We are watching history unfold in front of our eyes as the Coronavirus pandemic puts millions of people in quarantine around the world. This puts the world on halt in an attempt to decrease the spread of the virus and potentially save thousands of lives. While some of us introverted people may not be switching up our lifestyles too much, others may be having to pick up some new hobbies or finding things to keep themselves busy. What does this mean for America’s economy and how it will affect you? Some companies prefer the quarantine because of the profits they have made within the past couple of weeks. Brands such as Campbell, Netflix and Clorox have been benefiting while most companies aren’t. As people are practicing social distancing, entertainment and travel companies are taking a large hit until this pandemic is solved. Airlines, the film industry and even alcohol companies are having to postpone any large plans and wait until this passes. How does this affect you in the future? Financial analysts predict that the shortage of products we see here could cause a ripple effect in the supply chain. Companies we see everyday such as Coca Cola and Apple have suppliers that may have other suppliers and eventually these goods and services could be put on halt. After all of this clears up, products may not be able to be produced at the rate they are being shipped, causing a product shortage in the future. Another way the economy may affect you is the economy stimulus checks that the government has elected to give. People over the age of 18 that make less than $75,000 per year will receive a check in the mail for $1200 in an attempt for the money flow in the economy to return to normal as quickly as possible.
Although we may be living different lives than we did before this pandemic, I believe that President Trump and the rest of our government will keep our economy safe and healthy. If everyone can get together and agree on fighting this virus together, hopefully we will be back to our normal lives in no time. By: Abigail Solano One of the most rewarding feelings on earth is being able to accomplish one of your biggest dreams, something you have always wanted to do but lacked the supplies, drive, motivation or whatever else may have held you back. Miami freshman Sophia Blasi was able to make one of her dreams come true by creating and launching her own women’s clothing brand named Urban Luxe. This modern, street style clothing brand is definitely one to keep your eye on as it gains momentum. The refreshing styles and aesthetic pieces featured in the currently online store are all carefully chosen by Blasi herself. The website, https://www.urbanxxluxe.com, features clothing and accessories including my personal favorite item, the black vintage denim jacket. Source: Urbanxxluxe
Its growing social media platform gives the company a refreshing presence that is interactive and makes you want to get involved in everything it is doing. Advancing Women in Entrepreneurship featured the brand at their pop-up shop, giving the brand even more engagement. People were able to interact with the clothing and give Blasi the recognition she deserves for her entrepreneurship at such a young age. So, the next time you find yourself in need of some new styles or wanting to add a trendy new piece into your wardrobe, check out Urban Luxe on their website or on their Instagram @urbanxxluxe! Always remember to follow your dreams because you never know where it will take you. By: Sara Meek Source: ResumeLab
As the end of the semester approaches, many students will be looking for jobs. This is a stressful and hard time for graduating seniors and others looking for summer internships. Many students will be sending their resumes to potential employers for them to only get looked at for 15 seconds. How does an employer decide which resume continues on throughout the hiring process? It all comes down to keywords that are incorporated throughout the resume. Keywords are a recent phenomenon that have become extremely important as technology advances. Keywords are nouns that can be found in any job description explaining what the company is looking for in an employee. According to Katharine Hansen, Career Advice Expert, many employers are increasingly relying on keyword-searchable databases, referred to as the Applicant Tracking System, to help read through resumes and find keywords. What Counts as a Keyword? Finding a keyword in a job description to use in a resume can be difficult. Below is a list of potential noun examples that can help optimize a resume. The underlined words are the noun keywords employers are looking for.
Many employers have been shifting away from action verbs that have previously been keywords in resumes. Recently, the shift has been going towards “how” people can complete the action words through examples (or nouns). Instead of just making a list of the keywords, it is important to incorporate them throughout the resume so it sounds natural. Remember to have multiple resumes because different positions will require different keywords. For example, an advertising position and an internal relationships position will require different skills and tasks for each job. It is important to make each resume specific to what the job description is describing. My life got flipped upside down last week as I packed up my apartment, said goodbye to my friends and headed home. Like many college students across the country, I've chosen to bunker down with my parents for the duration of the COVID-19 pandemic. Many drastic changes to my life occurred within the span of one week and it's been a lot to process. As I try to wrap my head around the events going on in the world, on top of my personal stress, I've realized that there is so much out there that I can't control. But I can control myself, how I respond to this change and how I choose to use it to my advantage. I want to work against sinking into a lazy habit of sleeping in until noon, pushing my schoolwork to the last minute and getting sucked into endless hours of binging TV shows. It can be difficult to put yourself in the right mindset for school when at home, which is why it is important to maintain a solid schedule and dedicated work space. Based on my own best practices and anecdotes from others over time, online classes can be made more manageable by the following:
This is also the perfect chance to get into some hobbies that may not usually receive your time or mental space:
While we may only be at the beginning of this whole "social distancing" thing, hopefully this slower schedule can be an opportunity to expand on some hobbies and pastimes that usually get pushed to the side. By: Zach Curiale The podcast is becoming the new format for entertainment in popular culture. This media outlet is not only popular among college-age students, but across all age groups. There seems to be a podcast for just about everyone’s taste. Podcasts can offer comedic relief, news, music, story-telling and even reviews of movies. Podcasts have become an important media outlet for everyone and anyone. “Since 2006, more than 700,000 podcasts have been created, with over 30 million episodes of content, most of them for free,” Ben said in an article from Brandtastic.com. Podcasts have been rapidly picked up by many popular content makers. Comedian Trevor Wallace, for example, told Miami students to start watching his podcast “Stiff Socks” when he performed on campus earlier this semester. Podcasts will only continue to become part of the mainstream media. So, when you are bored of the day-to-day news and same old playlists you listen to on Spotify, try finding a podcast to fit your fancy. Some popular podcasts for the college-age demographic include:

TikTok ended up gaining popularity quite fast due to the large following its similar predecessor Musical.ly experienced. “The Musica.ly connection is key to understanding the TikTok platform, since the app rose to popularity with users posting short lip-synch videos and offering a community of users tackling trending songs” (PR Daily). Over time, TikTok has become one of the most used apps in recent years. Source: Oberlo Statistics
There are a few specific factors that have led to TikTok’s immense success. One factor is Generation Z’s tech-savvy skills and how Gen Zers have grown up with similar apps, creating a familiarity with TikTok. TikTok’s user demographic in terms of age ranges from 16-24, and Gen Z is right in the middle that. Another aspect that has helped TikTok grow is its song association. Within the past few months, I have heard people say, “This is a TikTok song,” due to its repetition on the app. By connecting certain trends whether it be a song or a dance with the app, people will only think of TikTok when that sound is played, growing the app’s influence. When compared to other apps, TikTok differentiates itself by providing an outlet for teens and young adults to express themselves. “Properties like TikTok are supporting and creating new forms of self-expression, and brands want to tap into that,” Williamson said. “It’s an experiment for many marketers. In many ways, TikTok is where Facebook was in the late 2000s, and where Snapchat was three or four years ago” (eMarketer principal analyst Debra Aho Williamson). TikTok separates itself by giving its users the ability to create trends that most often happen naturally. Anyone can create a trend, end up on the “for you page” and dance in front of their phone camera. According to Data Reportal, TikTok has 500 million users worldwide, placing it 9th among social network sites. Its competitors include YouTube, Snapchat and Instagram, some of the most used social media networks. The availability and relatability of the app make it very attractive to users. If people cannot relate to a platform, what is the point of the app’s existence? TikTok has created an empire of both creative expression and entertainment, expanding itself into the hands of millions of teens. What will be the next TikTok? |
